Using WMI to Filter GPO’s based on Windows Version and Role

Singapore Enterprise Security MVP John Marie Paloma shares a step by step guide on how you can use WMI filters in your GPO’s. This is especially usefully in scenarios such as:

  • You want to implement a GPO setting for a product feature on two or more versions of  OS, but the older version parameters do not work properly for the newer version (vice versa)
  • You want to implement a GPO in a high-level OU hierarchy but the settings should only be enforced on Windows Server 2008 R2 machines

(Note: Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) filtering is the process of customizing the scope of the GPO by choosing a WMI filter to apply.)
